What’s In A Name

Pre-study For The Book Of Jude

Matt. 5:16 – Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good
works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Many of us have run across two people with the same name. You know, John
Smith or James Brown. When I was a mail clerk in the Army a piece of mail came
to the unit for Private Jones. Now we had many soldiers in the battalion by the
name of Jones, but at the time only two privates. There was only one way to
determine which one was to get the mail. First, we had both soldiers come to
the mail room together. Both were then asked, "who’s from South
Carolina" and one answered, "me." Private Jones, the one who
answered, was then asked, "What’s your girlfriend’s name?" He
answered with the same name that was on the envelope.

I shared this experience with you because during my study of this text which
states, "Jude, brother of James" (Jude 1:1) I was led to a reference
scripture (Matt 13:55) that stated "his brethren, James, and Joses and
Simon, and JUDAS." (Step-brothers of Jesus.) Now this began to get my mind
to racing. So in an attempt to put 2 and 2 together I came up with 5 – here’s
why. Immediately after seeing the name Judas, I assumed that he was the same
Judas that betrayed Jesus. (Matt 26:14-16, 47-51). However this is not so.
After further study I found that the Lord’s word distinguishes the good Judas
from the betrayer by the following:

Names For The Good Judas

Names For The Bad Judas

(1) Judas, Not Iscariot
(2) Labbaeus
(3) Thaddaeus
(4) Jude
(5) Judas, The Brother Of James

(1) Judas Iscariot
(2) Judas, which betrayed Him
(3) Judas, Son of Simon
(4) Judas, one of the twelve
(5) Judas, Guide To Them That Took Jesus

A name goes a long, long way. Companies such as Nike, Mercedes-Benz, Rolex
invest vast amounts of capital to establish their names so when you hear them
you think, "Yeah, I wouldn’t mind buying or being seen wearing or driving
….." Now the all important question: "What have you invested in
your name?" I hope that people don’t associate your name with GODLESSNESS,
LYING, DISHONESTY, or IMMORALITY. To those who are NOT saved you may even have
a GOOD name, but that extra "O" is NOT going to get you in to heaven.
It takes GOD along with GOOD and the only way to God is through Jesus Christ.
(John 14:6)

Next week, Lord willing, we will cover verse 1 & 2 of Jude. This week’s
intro was for someone who didn’t know all that was shared – ME! I thank God for
the lessons He is teaching us and I solicit your prayers that we will continue
to learn together.
