Why Do We Sin?

Hebrews 3rd Chapter
12 Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.
13 But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.

Each Monday at Restored Glory Christian Center, we facilitate a teen meeting called ForRealVille. During that time, we let our youth “talk” to us, and believe me, we do “keep it real.” The topics cover everything, and I mean everything.

During one of the sessions, the group brought up sex, and when asked, “why is it people can’t wait until they get married,” one youth gave us a really good answer. He told us, “Because what you can’t have you steal!” Now, if you don’t think he answered that question directly, let me tell you what God revealed to me from within the young man’s answer.

The reason we sin is all due to the deceitfulness of sin. We will choose to take a short cut to get what God has for us instead of waiting on Him to give us what we are going to get. Instead of waiting, we will choose to steal an opportunity that is not ours. We will lie to get a promotion that’s not ours because we believe, “they’ll never promote me.” We will give ourselves to someone who is not our husband or wife because of the belief, “I’ll never get married.” We will give up on our dream because we have accepted the belief, “It won’t work out.”

Our text, beginning in the 12th verse, basically tells us to “take heed” or “ensure” that we don’t have an “evil heart of unbelief.” Now evil is not just satanic or demonic; it is anything contrary to God. And once our heart, “our belief system,” is contrary to God, the next step is to depart or turn away from Him.

So, what can we do to help each other from sinning? Encourage one another in God’s word. The 13th verse tells us to exhort, lift up, admonish, and advise each other daily while this day is called today. Yes beloved, as long as this day is called today, we need to encourage each other to live a victorious, prosperous, and holy life to ensure that we are not hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. You see, sin can deceive us to the point that we no longer care about what God says, thinks, or feels. Basically, sin hardens our hearts. Then once we are there, stealing opportunities that are not ours becomes more frequent because stealing is now a habit, not a mere mistake.

Therefore, this day I encourage, exhort, lift you up, and confirm God’s word over your life that you will see all that God desires for you to have in His perfect timing— that you don’t lose heart nor faint because what He promised you shall come to pass. I proclaim that the good thing you’ve been standing on, believing Him for, and holding out to see shall be seen – – – suddenly! You don’t have to doubt because He shall bring you out! You don’t have to stress because by Him you are blessed! And more importantly, you don’t have to sin because you’ll get what He has for you in the end!
